In my last article I talked about things that you should never do if your intentions were to avoid Instagram’s shadowban. Now we will discuss a 6-step strategy to help you escape the shadowban if you are already ensnared. Remember, your account will never grow to its full potential until you resolve this issue so take every step seriously.
Step One: Stop the follow-unfollow method
Many people are under the impression that to grow on Instagram they should be doing the follow-unfollow method. They shamelessly follow up to 700 people every day just to unfollow them the next day. This might get you a follower or two, but it will also get your account shadow banned. Many bot users utilise follow-unfollow as their main growth strategy. Instagram does not promote the use of automation software and will shadow ban accounts that behave in this manner.
Keep in mind, it’s not even the best way to grow your account. If you want to read about all the problems associated with the follow-unfollow method check out this article here.
Step Two: Do not post for at least 3 days
What do criminals on the run do? They lie low, and that’s exactly what you are going to do. In Instagram’s eyes you are like Michael Schofield from Prison Break! Do not post for 3 days, do not like anyone’s picture…not even your grandma’s. Don’t follow, don’t DM, just log out of the account. If the account is logged in to third-party apps, ensure that it has been logged out of those as well. Only once your account is a ghost can you move on to the next step.
Step Three: Change your account details
Criminals on the run get fake IDs and change their clothing, and you my friend are a criminal and should do the same.
I suggest you do the following:
- Change your Instagram username (you can change back later)
- Change your email address
- Add a different phone number for verification
- Remove the link in your bio (important)
The last point is particularly important. I remember growing one account in the fitness niche that had an affiliate link in its bio. One day Instagram suddenly gave me a shadowban from hell; I was unable to post captions or hashtags on any of my posts. I tried everything and could not resolve the issue until I removed the link. Once the link was removed, my account’s restriction was also removed, and a lesson was learned. Affiliate links are the easiest way for your account to receive a shadowban. Do not spam your links in the bio! There are better ways to make sales, which I will cover in future articles!
Step Four: Switch your account type
This step is very important! If you have a business profile, switch it to a personal profile. If you have a personal profile, switch it to a business profile. For some reason, this switch of account type resets certain metrics that Instagram keeps tabs on. Keep this change for at least a day before you switch back. Often this one step alone is enough to get an account out of the shadowban.
Step Five: Delete risky content
Sometimes simply deleting certain content and changing your account’s profile picture is enough to remove you from the shadowban. Look through the content you have previously posted on Instagram and delete or archive content that might be getting you into trouble.
As I mentioned in my article, certain types of content carry a high risk on Instagram and will get your account shadow banned swifter than Taylor Swift.
If you have previously purchased likes or comments on a post, make sure that you delete that content. Instagram is actively removing botting and spam accounts, so do not let these accounts leave a footprint on yours.
Step Six: Change your hashtags
One of the most common means by which accounts become shadow banned is through abusing hashtags. Posting the same hashtags repeatedly is not a proper growth strategy. It’s a shadowban strategy that will leave your account invisible for all your listed hashtags.
If you have been using the same hashtags for many posts in a row, I suggest you change them. Find some new ones and make it a habit to change these hashtags on every couple of posts.
For maximum growth you should be adapting hashtags from post to post based on relevancy.
The Instagram shadowban can become an incredibly painful experience if you do not know how to deal with it! I have given you the 6-step blueprint to removing your account from the shadowban. No account can be shadow banned forever (that’s what proper bans are for), so there is always a chance to recover. Instagram needs some signs to ensure that you will not continue doing the same things that got you shadow banned in the first place.
Start with this 6-step method, and then continue posting good and valuable content. Do this long enough and your account will begin to grow.
Keep in mind the changes you made regarding your account details can be temporary. Once your account is back to normal, feel free to change what ever details you want back. Make sure that you do not commit any of the actions that got you shadow banned in the first place. Once your account has been flagged by Instagram, it becomes much easier for it to be flagged again. They have your prints so take it easy from now on!
You will never be able to reach your true potential with a shadowban. That is why you need to take this advice seriously and watch your account flourish!
